INTRODUCTION: The diagnostic peritoneal lavage (DPL) is a technique highly effective and necessary in the initial care of the polytrauma patient, being one of the simplest and highly reproducible, it’s one of the major abilities in the arsenal of the medical profession when it comes to treating a patient in critical hemodynamic care post-trauma. The present study aims on analyzing the improvement of this technique in students through the use of a low-cost model made by the researchers of this project, where it can reproduce the anatomy and experience similar to the biological model used in classes already implemented. Furthermore, the proposed model manages to express the main complications of the DPL technique, offering maximum experience to the apprentice student. Thus, it is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of the synthetic DPL model in medical students as an educational method. METHODOLOGY: This is a cross-sectional study of exploratory observational nature and of descriptive and analytical character, preceded by a pilot study that investigated the possible difficulties in understanding the research instrument. In the study were included: students of both sexes, aged 18 years or over, properly enrolled in the seventh semester of the UNIT-AL Medicine course and who are currently studying or have already attended the surgical skills 2 subject. Were excluded from the analysis questionnaires that did not contain answers for at least 67% of the items in each investigated domain and/or that did not answer any questions that characterized the participant's profile. A semi-structured questionnaire was used with answers in an ordinal Likert-type scale, prepared by the authors themselves, which contained questions that investigated the skills and abilities of distinguishing the anatomy of the anterior abdominal wall, knowledge of materials necessary to perform the technique, being able to work as a team, being able to perform the technique itself, characterize its complications and diagnostic results. RESULTS: The primary objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of the synthetic diagnostic peritoneal lavage model in medical students as an educational method. The main expected results are the proper handling of the DPL technique by the students and the proper learning of the procedure in order to avoid complications. The main expected outcomes are based on the better efficacy of the synthetic model in comparison with the biological ones that already exist in surgical technique laboratories. With this, students will get to know better the surgical approach of the DPL, the main anatomical points of the anterior abdominal wall, knowing how to teamwork and gaining experience with the main complications and outcomes of the procedure. CONCLUSION: Due to low cost and easier handling the synthetic model, it is extremely important to evaluate its effectiveness as a learning method, correlating with the main points addressed in the surgical technique. Thus, the synthetic model would present a new study modality with high reproducibility and low cost, with satisfactory efficacy in order to avoid possible complications in the future with this technique, in addition to providing a greater diagnostic arsenal for future medical professionals.
ER -
