ABSTRACT:

Introduction: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease that affects the nervous system, classified as a neurodegenerative disease, which begins through a failure in the immune system, in which it confuses healthy cells for invading cells. It is characterized by the demyelination of the central nervous system which, over time, can lead to atrophy or even loss of brain mass. Therefore, this myelination is constituted by the myelin sheath, since it is a protein synthesized from a glial cell, called oligodendrocytes. This myelin sheath is intended to protect axons from neurons, in addition to facilitating synapses and faster transmission of nerve impulse. It is worth mentioning that this process is potentially irreversible. This autoimmune disease can affect the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. The main signs and symptoms present in patients with multiple sclerosis are imbalance, tingling in the extremity, changes in motor coordination, headache, changes in mood, depression, cognitive difficulties and muscle spasms. This disease is prevalent in the adult age group between 20 and 49 years old and mainly female individuals. Objective: The present study aimed to understand the analysis of morbidity data in adults, in order to trace the epidemiological profile by region of hospitalizations with multiple sclerosis (ICD 10 - G35) in Brazil, according to the variables gender, age group age and hospitalizations in the period from January 2010 to July 2020. Methods: An epidemiological, descriptive and cross-sectional research, of time series, where data collection was performed in the Health Information System (TABNET), by consulting the SUS Hospital Information System database. The epidemiological analysis was based on the period from 2010 to 2020, by comparing numbers of cases according to sex, age group and hospitalizations. Results: In the analysis carried out during this period, 22,453 cases of multiple sclerosis were confirmed in Brazil, with 6,548 affecting men and 15,905 women. In addition, the region with the most hospitalizations was the southeast region with 14,498 cases, just after the South region with 3,895 cases, then the Central-West region with 1,987 cases, in addition the Northeast region with 1,502 and finally the North region was the one with the least number of cases related to the other regions, with 571 cases. It is noteworthy that in all these regions it prevailed among female patients. Conclusion: Therefore, multiple sclerosis has already been available for several treatments, but few are effective, as the mechanism of this disease has not yet been fully understood.

Keywords: demyelination, neurodegenerative disease, central nervous system.
ER -
